News You Can Use
Optional Warm-Ups Gear Available!
Back by popular demand, we will again be gathering orders for a group purchase of warm-up equipment and running gear. This is strictly optional - the school will issue running shorts, shirt and gray cotton warm-ups. Please check out the warm-up page to see what is being offered. There is an order form on that page as well - print it out and follow the instructions on the bottom of the page. Sue Greathouse will be collecting the information and making the group purchase.
School Policy on Driving to Events
- A student cannot drive him/herself to any event. Students doing this will not be allowed to compete.
- A student cannot drive other students at anytime during school functions or practices.
- If you leave early (ie, get a ride home from your parents), be sure to check out with the coach before you leave. The coach will also want to see you leave with your parent, so parents, please park the car and meet your athlete on the field when they check out. Thanks in advance.
- Parents: If you plan on giving a ride to other students, you need to first fill out paperwork with the school office. This takes some time, so please plan ahead. Your cooperation is appreciated. (This has been district policy since 2001)
Practice Info
- For all practices and meets, you must check in with PattiSue. This is an official class.
- We practice Monday through Friday, rain or shine
- Times: 3:45 to 6:00

Hey Everyone,
Well its finally here...our first week of practice. Can't wait to see you all tomorrow!
A few reminders....
- Meet at the bleachers of the track, rain or shine.
- Wear a jacket if you don't want to get wet.
- Practice starts at 3:45.
- Wear shoes, shorts, sweats.
- It may be cold and damp. Dress appropriately.
- BRING YOUR OWN WATER.
Please get your participation fee into the bookkeeper ASAP.
If you haven't signed up and are doing a winter sport, please let us know so that we can get you on the roster.
Mrs. Greathouse, Scott's mom, will be in charge of our team sweats. She will be taking orders next week at practice; in the mean time she has forwarded this information:
Optional Track Warmups and Compressions Shorts:
Athletes need to have sweats/warmups for practice and meets to keep muscles warm. The school will provide grey sweats to any athlete, these need to be turned in at the end of the season. Many athletes order warmups that they can keep and reuse for xcountry and track. The warmups are Nike, royal blue, jackets have "Los Altos", the eagle logo and the athlete's first initial and last name embroidered on the right upper side.
Compression shorts are worn under the track shorts and are available in girls and boys styles.
Pricing info:
Warmup Jacket: $60
Warmup Pants: $39
Girls shorts: $22
Boys shorts: $17
Order forms are available on the track website. Payment needs to be given to the bookkeeper and the receipt and order form given to Sue Greathouse by Thurs, Feb. 12. Questions? suegreathouse@yahoo.com
Finally, many of you have been training hard during the winter off-season (some harder then others), and have expressed interest in kicking off the track season with a fun run/race. On Superbowl Sunday, Fleet Feet (Runner's High) in Menlo Park is hosting a 5K/scavenger hunt. Of course, this is totally optional, and just for fun!! Thanks to Coach Charles for helping arrange this. He'll bring sign-up sheets and waivers on Tuesday. Here's the scoop:
The Palo Alto Grand Prix in conjunction with Fleet Feet (Runners High) will be hosting Super Bowl Shuffle II. The shuffle will take place on Sunday February 7th (Super Bowl Sunday) at 11 AM. (NOTE: not too early!!) Our kick off time gives our participants plenty of time to sleep in, and more than enough time to make it back for the 3:30 pm kick off. Entry is free, but a $5 donation to the "From Our Feet" program is requested. You may also bring shoes to donate. Any money collected will be used to pay for boxes that are used to ship shoes around the world.
The Shuffle is part scavenger hunt, part poker, part 5k fun run. Participants will be given one hour to reach 3 checkpoints, and return to Fleet Feet/Runners High. Each checkpoint has a playing card. Players will try to accumulate the best poker hand. No age group prizes or times will be given, but the top 10 poker hands for both male and female will be awarded prizes donated by local vendors. The top male and female winners (based on best poker hand) will be given a free pair of training shoes. The roads will not be shut down, as this is more of a community run than a race. Fleet Feet will be offering several great sales on merchandise, and snacks will be provided. Participation is limited to the first 200 people.
Here is the vital information:
Check in Time Starts: 10 AM on February 7, 2010
Start Time: 11 AM
How to Register: Email your name and age to SuperBowlShufflers@yahoo.com (This allows us to estimate participation). Then sign our entry form on event day.
That's it for now. See you all tomorrow. On behalf of all the coaches, we are looking forward to the best season yet.

Hey Everyone,
Preseason is just around the corner. Make sure you schedule your physicals and get your paperwork in if you haven't done so already. If you did a fall sport, you still need to pay the participation fee for track if you haven't done so already. Of course, if you need a fee waiver, please talk to Mrs. Cave.
If you need shoes, please purchase them at a reputable running store. It makes a big difference. We have a list on our website, LosAltostrack.com. They will give you a discount if you tell them you run HS track. Unfortunately after 20 years in our area, MetroSport has closed down. There is a new store on California Avenue in Palo Alto that looks pretty good. I think the name is Zumba (?). If you can afford it, it might be a good time to get waterproof sweats, and maybe some gloves and hats. Maybe if we all by rain gear, the sun will come out!
If you don't know how old your shoes are, they are too old. We want to keep you healthy which means good shoes.
Please come to the preseason meeting Wednesday at lunch in the small gym. This will be a short, but important meeting. It is especially important to come even if you are doing a winter sport.
If you want to get a few workouts before next week, I will be at the track on Tuesday, Weds, and Thursday at 4:00pm. Coach Gerri will be at the track on Weds. at 3:45. IWhether you can make it or not, work on your foot strength on your own. Walk barefoot around the house, do toe raisers, point and flex, and ankle rotations whenever possible. If you want more strenthing tips, let me know.
Official Preseason starts at 3:45 on Monday, Febuary 1st.
As always, contact me with any questions or concerns.

Hi Everyone,
Many of you have expressed interest in running in the Woodside Trail run/race on Feb. 6. I have included a link below.
Weather permitting, I think it would be a wonderful experience and you can choose to run in either the 10K (6.2miles) or 17K
(10.6 miles). Don't even think about the 35K or 50K. Huddard Park is gorgeous and the trails are usually in great shape.
However, as you can see by reading the website, the entry fee is $30/$35 which you will have to pay yourselves. The size of
the fields are limited and they are almost sold out so no discounts Please sign up right away if you would like to attend,
and let me know so that I can make sure to be there. If you would really like to participate but cannot do so due to expense,
please let me know! I'll try to arrange a fee waiver.

Hey Everyone,
It is really wet out there, but for those of you tough enough, we are still offering winter conditioning (note the "winter" adjective). We had a great group out today and if you are up for it, we will have training the Tues, Weds and Thurs. Tomorrow, we will have warm-up at 4pm and Coach Charles will be leading a run at 4:15. On Weds, Coach Gerri and I will be there at 3:45 and 4:00 respectively, and I will be there at 4pm on Thursday. Wear gloves, long sleeves and sweat pants if you have them.
As always, let me know if you have questions or comments.

Happy New Year!
I hope that you have been enjoying your winter break... sleeping, eating, training, playing...maybe working on those college apps. The spring sports season gets started on Feb. 1, 2010, but for those of you who are interested we will be having informal, voluntary workouts M-Th starting Jan. 4. We will be meeting at the track at 3:45. The distance group will be pointing toward a low key race on either the last weekend of weekend of January or the first weekend of Feb. I have found a 10K trail race in Woodside on Feb. 6, but because of the narrowness of the trails, entries are limited to 100 runners so we need to decide pretty quickly.
A great way to kick off 2010 is the Los Altos New Years Day 5K Fun Run. My recollection is that last year that fast kid from Almond was the first runner...as good as he is that should not happen (ha, ha). It starts at the intersection of Main and State streets at 9am.
For those of you reading this who are more sprint/jump/throws oriented, Coach Gerri and I will be sending out an email to you guys in the next week or so outlining our plans for the season and pre-season training opportunities for you. Of course, the conditioning work we will be doing (on a voluntary basis of course) will be beneficial to all athletes and can be taylored to more specic events as needed. Fitness is always helpful!!
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Please do so via email or texting, 533-4527 (I'm not always able to get messages so these are better methods of contacting me). Have a fun but SAFE New Years.
