Welcome

Welcome to the 2010 Track and Field Season!!

We are very excited about the upcoming season and look forward to seeing both our returning veterans and lots of new faces. One new face will be our new sprint coach, Dave Barth. Dave is a former Los Altos High School sprinter and Boston University Grad where he competed in track. You'll learn more about Dave in upcoming emails, but he brings a lot a great energy and knowledge to our coaching staff. Plus, he can tell you California kids thinking about going to school on the east coast what it is really like to train and compete in that kind of environment. Dave will also be assisting Coach Carty who is returning to coach the hurdles and jumps. Otherwise you will be seeing a lot of the same old faces....me (400/800 on up), Gerri (throws and a little bit of everything else), Coach Charles (Chaz) (throws), Coach Charles (assist. distance), and maybe one or two others (fingers crossed).

The official pre-season starts on Monday, Feb. 1. You need to get your blue cards (physical) in if you haven't already done so. No, if you have done another sport at LAHS during the 2009/10 school year you do not need to turn another form in. Yes, you need to redo all your paper work if you are a returning athlete who has not participated in a sport since last track season. If you need help finding a doctor who can provide you with a physical, please contact Mrs. Cave's office and she will give you the information you need. If you have no idea what I am talking about, you are probably new to sports at Los Altos. Please check out the school website to see all the forms that you need to fill out before you can participate in track. Remember you also need to pay your participation fee to the bookkeeper and make sure you have an ASB card. Every sport has a participation fee so if you ran XC, for example, you still need to pay a fee for track. If paying the fee is a hardship for your family, fee waivers are available from Mrs.Cave. Finally, all students must have insurance. If your family does not have insurance, Mrs. Cave can help you with that as well. What else do you need? Good shoes, shorts, sweats (don't need anything fancy, but muscles warm up better when covered...right Erin?), and a positive attitude. We work hard, but have a lot of fun too. But that's tough to do if you are grumpy or negative. More on that later... Speaking of shoes, please don't get your first pair of training shoes from Payless or Sportsmart, especially if you plan to run anything longer than a 200 and really even then...). There is a reason why those shoes are cheaper...and its not because of quality. If money is an issue, please, please, please let me know. We can help. There is information as to where to buy shoes on the LosAltostrack.com website.

We will be having a preseason team meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at lunch time in the small gym. All interested athletes should attend, even those in winter sports and even if you are not 100% sure you will participating in track. It will only take a few minutes once everyone arrives.

Speaking of the LosAltostrack.com website....we post lots of information on that website, including my outgoing emails. If you missed something or deleted something or can't remember the name of your coach, it will be there. Jim Clark (alumnus parent of Mikey and Jeff), does a great job of keeping it updated with the most recent information. Check it periodically. If you have a question, it is probably answered there. And if it isn't, contact Jim and he'll probably add it to the website for you.

Starting on Feb. 1, will be meeting at the track at 3:45. We will warm up as a team. The warm-up is an important part of the training process. Please don't be late. There will be consequences.. More on that later as well..... If you are doing a winter sport, you cannot attend our official practices (which, again, start on Feb. 1) until your season is over. For example, if you are on the JV soccer team, you cannot start track practice until the day after your last game. However, you do not need to wait until the varsity team is finished (unless, obviously, you are called up to varsity) If you have any questions about that, contact me. What if you have a friend, especially you freshmen, that didn't sign up for track at the beginning of the year? Is it too late for them? NO and make sure they know it. It isn't too late, and won't be too late till we start our official regular season.

But what if you don't want to wait that long? What if you aren't doing a winter sport and have spent too much time on playing Guitar Hero version 89 or Sims3 and know you need to get back into shape. What if you really miss us and want to see your old coaches? What if you want to get a jump on the track season so that you are ready to run fast, jump high, or throw far by our first meet. We have a solution for you. Winter conditioning in going right now!! Between now and the start of the season, I am out there at 4pm Monday thru Thursday. Anyone is welcome to join the workouts...even those of you who are not distance oriented. I will adjust the workout to your event and fitness (assuming you come on time, right Kyle?). If you want to get a little practice and playing time throwing or jumping, Coach Gerri will be there Monday and Wednesdays at 3:45 supervising the "technical" events. Coach Carty and Coach Dave will be there on Mondays, as well. OF COURSE, THIS IS NOT MANDATORY! but some of you will really benefit from the early workouts (right Sophia and Serina). If you are doing a winter sport and your coach is cool with it, you can participate in the winter conditioning program if it doesn't conflict with your team practice. After Feb.1, you cannot participate until your season is over.

This Monday, MLK day, I will still be there at 4pm. However, Coach Gerri, Coach Dave and Coach Chaz will be going to a "learn by doing" clinic at Mt. Pleasant High School. It is open to all students and coaches. If you would like to attend, and it should be interesting and fun, please let me or Coach Gerri know and we will make sure that it happens.

As always, feel free to contact me with questions or comments. I enjoy (usually) hearing from you:-)) By the way, the date for the mandatory parent meeting will be in the next email.
